Mars whisky

Located between Japan’s soaring Southern Alps and the towering Central Alps, at just over 2,600 feet, Mars Shinshu is Japan’s highest whisky distillery. The Hombo family have been distilling for more than a century and added whisky to their repertoire in 1949. At that time the distillery was located in the Tsunuki region of Kagoshima Prefecture on the southern-most island of Kyushu.

Until 1984, it was the southernmost whisky made in Japan, which ended when the Hombo clan moved the distillery to the idyllic alpine setting of Miyada village in southern Nagano Prefecture, Central Japan. They chose this site for its cool temperature, which slowed maturation, and the plentiful soft granite filtered snowmelt fed aquifers. A beautiful choice.

In 2016, Hombo Shuzo reopened and introduced new pot stills to their first distillery location in Kagoshima now known as the Mars Tsunuki Distillery, once again Japan’s southernmost distillery. They also built an aging facility on a tiny island known as Yakushima, a National World Heritage site, where they now age spirits from both Shinshu and Tsunuki distilleries.

MARS THE LUCKY CAT DOUBLE INDIVIDUALS HANA & CHOCO

NAGANO, JAPAN

The 9th edition of The Lucky Cat series features two of the distillery's beloved cats, this time a pair of sisters. The two have completely different looks and temperaments which the skilled blenders of Komagatake have reflected in the whisky. Hana is a big gentle baby, represented by warm approachability of oloroso and wine casks. Choco is a bit more rambunctious, with a real energetic disposition that is represented by the boldness of Spanish Oak. Opposites attract, and like these sisters huddling together on cold winter nights, their namesake blended whisky is a reflection of individuals mellowing together.

MARS THE Y.A. #01 52% ABV

This is the first edition of the new Y.A. series from Mars. 1740 bottles for the USA

Mars The Y.A. #01 is the first edition of whiskies showcasing the unique terroir of Yakushima Island where it is aged. Not to be confused with Mars’ Komagatake Yakushima Aging single Malt distilled at Shinshu, this is a whole new line of whiskies focused on the expressive flavors of salinity and tropical fruit that aging on Yakushima can yield. This first edition is a pure malt blend of whiskies from both the Shinshu and Tsunuki distilleries that are primarily aged in ex -bourbon barrels in the one-of-a-kind island conditions of Yakushima. This whisky is packed with the rich texture of banana cream and candied tropical fruits that yields to a long slightly smokey finish of sweet malty depth. If The Y.A #01 is an indicator of whiskies to come from Mars, the future is indeed bright.

This is the second edition of the new Y.A. series from Mars.

Mars The Y.A. #2 is a continuation of the blended malt series from the distilleries Komagatake and Tsunuki. Whiskies from each distillery are married together and aged entirely on the island of Yakushima. Yakushima is a small world heritage site about 60 km off the southern coast of Kyushu, Japan that sports year-round rain, subtropical temperatures, and heavy humidity. The unique terroir of the island makes it a one-of-a-kind location to mature whisky. This second edition of Y.A. (Yakushima Aging), has a smokier profile than its predecessor making for a wonderfully complex dram that balances peat and fruit. Think grilled pears, black tea, and honey with sea salt and you are almost there. Mars The Y.A. #2 is a perfect evolution of this series that showcases the singular terroir of Yakushima.

Mars Tsunuki Single Malt Edition 2023 50% ABV

Tsunuki is Mars Hombo’s second distillery, opened in 2016 in Kagoshima where the company can trace its origins. While the Komagatake Distillery in Nagano focuses on a delicate “clean” style of whisky, Tsunuki creates whiskies that are bass-y and rich with a greater emphasis on smoke. The climate is humid and subtropical at Tsunuki, which is quite literally the polar opposite of Komagatake in Nagano. Think low elevation and hot vs high elevation and cool. Kagoshima’s unique climate creates an environment uniquely suited to extracting flavor from barrels as a whisky matures. This edition sees maturation in a combination of ex bourbon, as well as sherry casks, that build layers of thick, nuanced flavor. Pastry cream, pancakes, lemon peels and a kiss of smokey malt all exist harmoniously in this wonderful fourth release from the Tsunuki Distillery.

MALT DUO MARS 54% ABV

THE SIX YEAR SECRET UNVEILED

Venture Whisky and Hombo Shuzo have announced that they are releasing new bottles of malt whisky: Double Distilleries 2021 from Venture Whisky and Malt Duo 2021 from Hombo Shuzo. The new bottles are the result of a collaboration between the two distilleries in terms of a whisky exchange. The companies initiated the joint project in 2015 and started by exchanging new-make whisky. The distilleries then stored the spirits they received in casks in their warehouses.
They spent almost six years aging the whisky, watching the progress closely and reporting to each other on how the whisky was developing. Getting reports on the maturation status from the other distillery was like “hearing about my children growing up in a different city,” said Mr. Kunai, the director and blender of Mars Whisky.
Both Venture Whisky and Hombo Shuzo believe that the experiment had led to new dimensions that were brought by the different malts. They hope that whisky fans around the world will enjoy their new products and that more people will enjoy a variety of Japanese whisky in the future.

mars 'hoken' 30 yr brandy 58.0% ABV

Hombo Shuzo produces spirits and wine under the brand name Mars.

Mars Winery is in Yamanashi, the heart of Japanese wine production, and it is where ‘Hoken’ was made, from the grapes harvested there. The grape variety is the “Delaware”, it is a grape native to Japan. Delaware is also an edible grape. This makes it juicy and surprisingly fruity when made into wine. The wine was distilled in the Shinshu Distillery in 1987 and aged there for over thirty years. Brandy from five casks was blended and bottled with minimum filtration, to preserve its elegant complexity. The name Hoken is the name of one of the major peaks of the Central Alps in Nagano. The nose offers apricot and dried fruits, with a hint of white pepper and nutmeg. The palate is elegant with raisin, cinnamon, and almond. The finish is long and pleasant, with some spicy notes.

grape details

As mentioned above, Delaware grapes is from Yamanashi Prefecture. Yamanashi is the most famous area for growing wine grapes in Japan. It is environment with warm summers and cold winters, with a big difference in temperature throughout the year. Grapes are grown by method of pergola (not guyot) tailoring. The ripe Delaware from Yamanashi was used to ferment a fruity aromatic wine for brandy.

In September 2020, Mars Shinshu Distillery was renovated and expanded 35 years post-establishment. This Japanese blended whisky, which is at least 8 years old, has refreshing notes reminiscent of the Shinshu forest and wildflowers. The butterfly Asagimadara (Parantica sita) on the label, known for migrating long distances, is seen in Miyada Village, where the distillery is located.

This malt and grain blend is 100% Japanese-made, with the malt spirit distilled at Mars Shinshu Distillery and the grain spirits sourced from a different local distillery before the Japanese whisky boom.

mars the lucky cat 'luna' 40% ABV

Luna is the 6th edition of Mars Shinshu’s Lucky Cat series of blended whiskies. Luna is a blend of malt whisky distilled at Mars’ Nagano distillery and grain whisky that is aged primarily in manzanilla, along with oloroso sherry casks. The bittersweet character of sherry balances the lush tones of caramel, brown sugar, and cocoa that comprise this incredibly quaffable whisky.

This bottling is named after the new Hombo family calico cat, Luna. 990 bottles for the USA.
